Swimwear at our French Centres

After numerous requests for clarification of what swimwear was appropriate in the campsite pools in France, we have included this page to answer people's questions on this sensitive subject!

All of our three centres in South West France have, from the beginning of the 2009 season, started to enforce their proper swimwear rule.

In short, that means that no one is allowed in the centre swimming pools in baggy shorts (including baggy, thigh length swimming shorts) or tee shirts.

Instead, male students are required to wear tight fitting, lycra-type shorts or brief-style trunks such as the ones pictured below.

Female students will only be allowed in the pool wearing either a bikini or full swimming costume. Again, no tee shirts or additional baggy clothing will be allowed.

The explanation given by the campsite and local health and safety authorities is that this tight fitting swimwear is now law and this is to avoid pool users becoming trapped as a result of clothing becoming tangled in filtration equipment.

We are told this clothing requirement also helps to maintain the water quality in the pool as there is less chance of sand and microorganisms from the lake and/or Atlantic entering the pool via baggy clothing.

Whilst some groups have 'got away' with not wearing 'proper swimwear' in previous years visits, this is no longer possible and therefore all Group Leaders should ensure their group is fully informed of this change for all 2009 trips to our French centres and henceforth.

As far as the sailing and watersports activities on the lake, in the Atlantic or on visits to the Aqualand water park are concerned, pupils are allowed to wear board shorts.

Our staff will continue to remain highly vigilant in respect of sun protection and ensuring students are taking care not to expose their skin to the sun for extended periods of time.
